Overlook Trail

Overlook Trail approaches the 136-foot main Burgess Falls from above, providing a top-down perspective on the waterfall that complements the base-level view available from the main Burgess Falls Trail. From the overlook platform, the full crest of the falls is visible as the Falling Water River pours over the limestone lip in a wide, powerful curtain. The aerial perspective reveals the geology of the falls clearly, showing the layered limestone and chert strata that have been undercut by the falling water over thousands of years. The surrounding forest thins near the overlook, allowing light to reach the cliff edge and supporting a community of drought-tolerant plants adapted to the exposed limestone bedrock. The short length of this trail makes it accessible to nearly all fitness levels, and it pairs naturally with the longer Burgess Falls Trail for visitors who want multiple perspectives on the same waterfall. Interpretive panels at the overlook explain the park's geological history and the role of the Falling Water River in shaping the landscape. No entrance fee is required. The trailhead parking area fills on busy spring and fall weekends, so mid-week visits offer a more relaxed experience. The overlook platform can be slippery when wet.
