River Trail

River Trail follows the Falling Water River through Burgess Falls State Park, traversing limestone bluffs and river bottom forest before the main waterfall trail begins. This gentler route highlights the river corridor away from the major falls, where the Falling Water River flows through a series of bedrock chutes and shallow pools over exposed limestone pavement. The river is clear and fast-moving, and native smallmouth bass can often be spotted in the deeper pools. The limestone bluffs along the river support distinctive plant communities including yellow-flowered rough blazing star, cliff goldenrod, and various native ferns adapted to the calcareous substrate. The forest overhanging the river includes hackberry, box elder, and sycamore, creating a cool, shaded corridor even on hot summer days. This trail provides a peaceful riparian experience distinct from the dramatic waterfall focus of the main park trails. It serves as an ideal warmup walk or alternative for visitors who prefer gentler terrain. No fee is charged. The park is located between Sparta and Cookeville in White County, Tennessee, and is easily accessible from Interstate 40. The trailhead parking area is shared with the main Burgess Falls Trail access.
