Caddo Lake Swamp Trail

The Caddo Lake Swamp Trail winds through the margins of the largest natural lake in Texas and one of the most hauntingly beautiful wetland landscapes in the American South. Caddo Lake is a labyrinthine world of bald cypress rising from black water, their knees emerging like prehistoric sentinels from the surface while Spanish moss curtains hang from every branch, filtering the light into a perpetual green-gold atmosphere that seems to belong to another era entirely.

The lake was formed by a massive log jam in the Red River, and its maze of cypress-studded channels, bayous, and sloughs creates an ecosystem of extraordinary biodiversity. American alligators are abundant and regularly visible from the trail, basking on banks and floating motionless in the shallows. Wood ducks are the characteristic waterfowl, their iridescent plumage flashing through the shadowed cypress channels. Great blue herons, little blue herons, and anhinga populate every section of the swamp edge. The trail itself moves along the lake margin and through adjacent bottomland forest, providing excellent wetland views at every turn. Caddo Lake is designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, and walking this trail provides visceral understanding of why this distinction was awarded.
