Raven Cliff Falls Trail

Raven Cliff Falls Trail leads to Raven Cliff Falls—at 420 feet, the tallest waterfall in South Carolina and one of the tallest in the eastern United States. The falls plunge over the Caesars Head escarpment in a dramatic four-tiered cascade, the longest single drop measuring approximately 200 feet before continuing in a second major fall and series of cascades to the gorge below. The Mathews Creek drainage that feeds the falls cuts a deep gorge through the Caesars Head granodiorite, creating a microclimatic corridor of biological significance.

The trail descends from the escarpment's top into the gorge via a series of switchbacks through chestnut oak and mountain laurel forest, crossing Mathews Creek twice on sturdy log bridges before reaching the observation platform with the full face-on view of the falls. The platform view is exceptional—the complete falls sequence is visible in a single frame, with the upper plunge visible through a gap in the gorge walls. The mist zone below the falls supports hepatica, trout lily, and jack-in-the-pulpit in spring. The moderate rating reflects one sustained steep descent and the return climb of 600 feet. Eastern hemlocks persist in the protected gorge microclimate, and the park aggressively treats them to preserve this irreplaceable community.
