Netarts Bay Shoreline

Netarts Bay Shoreline offers a gentle, flat walk along the eastern shore of Netarts Bay, one of Oregon's most productive and pristine coastal estuaries and a wonderful complement to the more strenuous headland and forest trails in Cape Lookout State Park. Netarts Bay is notable for being one of the few Oregon bays without a river inlet, receiving its water primarily from tidal exchange and groundwater seepage, which creates exceptionally clear water and a particularly rich clam habitat. The bay is famous among recreational clammers for its abundant razor clam and littleneck clam populations, and visitors digging for clams with shovels and buckets are a common sight during low tide. The shoreline walk traverses the intertidal zone at low tide, with extensive mudflat and eelgrass habitat exposed as the water recedes. Eelgrass beds are critical nursery habitat for juvenile Dungeness crab and numerous fish species. Great blue herons, great egrets, and a variety of shorebird species including dunlin, western sandpiper, and dowitchers feed actively in the shallow water and exposed mudflats. The forested headland of Cape Lookout is visible across the bay, providing scenic context and orientation. Harbor seals haul out on sandbars in the bay and are regularly observed from the shoreline trail. The flat terrain and minimal elevation make this trail accessible to hikers of all abilities, including families with young children and seniors.
