Devils Churn Loop

Devils Churn Loop visits one of the most dramatic and accessible coastal geological features on the Oregon coast, a narrow tidal inlet cut into the basalt headland where incoming waves funnel through a channel only a few feet wide and explode in towers of white spray that can reach twenty feet or more during high surf conditions. The basalt bedrock at Cape Perpetua has been fractured and eroded by millions of years of wave action, creating a series of tidepools, channels, and blowholes that display the immense power of the Pacific Ocean in vivid and visceral terms. The churn itself is a slot canyon-like feature where the wave energy is concentrated and released in spectacular fashion, the sound of each incoming surge building to a crescendo of roaring water and boiling foam. The paved, accessible loop trail circles the inlet at a safe distance, with viewpoints positioned to provide the optimal perspective on the churning action without exposing visitors to wave hazard. Interpretive signs explain the geological processes that created the churn and the broader basalt landscape of the Cape Perpetua headland. The adjacent tidepools are among the most productive and diverse on the central Oregon coast, accessible during low tide and rich with anemones, ochre sea stars, turban snails, and numerous algae species. Spouting Horn, a nearby blowhole, provides additional dramatic water action on large swell days. The short distance makes this an essential stop for all Cape Perpetua visitors.
