X Cave Tour Trail

The X Cave Tour Trail combines a short surface approach with a guided wild cave spelunking experience through X Cave—one of Carter Caves' most geologically rich and geomorphologically interesting passages, named for the X-shaped intersection of two cave passages at its central junction. Unlike the park's paved show cave tours, the X Cave experience requires participants to crawl, squeeze, and navigate through undeveloped passages lit only by personal headlamps, providing a genuine wild caving experience under the supervision of park naturalists. The cave's geology is immediately impressive upon entry: X Cave developed along two intersecting fracture planes in the Ste. Genevieve Limestone, and the passage walls display the dissolution features characteristic of phreatic cave formation—scalloped bedrock surfaces carved by turbulent underground water flow, ceiling pockets, and the ceiling domes formed where rising carbon dioxide-rich water attacked the rock from below. Formation chemistry is on display throughout the tour, with pristine white calcite flowstone, translucent soda straw stalactites extending several feet from the ceiling, and massive column formations where stalactites and stalagmites have merged. The cave maintains a constant 54 degrees Fahrenheit regardless of surface conditions, making it a cool refuge in summer and surprisingly warm in winter. Eastern small-footed bats and tri-colored bats roost in the cave during winter hibernation; tours are suspended during the hibernation season to protect the federally threatened species.
