Castle Crags Trail – Castle Crags Sp
The Castle Crags Trail ascends to a dramatic zone of ancient gray granite spires rising 6,000 feet above the Sacramento River Valley, one of the most striking geological formations in Northern California and a sacred site for the Wintu people for thousands of years. The trail climbs steeply through mixed conifer forest before emerging onto the bare granite slabs and spires of the Crags, where the terrain becomes increasingly dramatic and the views increasingly expansive. The granite here is among the oldest exposed rock in California, formed by plutonic intrusion some 170 million years ago and sculpted by glaciers into the cathedral-like pinnacles visible today. On clear days, the snow-capped volcanic cone of Mount Shasta dominates the northern horizon, its perfect symmetry contrasting dramatically with the jagged, ancient granite of the Crags. The upper trail requires some scrambling on exposed granite surfaces, demanding care and good footwear. Peregrine falcons nest in the upper crags, and their aerial displays are a spectacular sight. The Sacramento River glitters far below in the valley. Hikers should start early to avoid afternoon heat in summer and bring plenty of water, as none is available above the lower forest zone.
