The Root Creek Trail follows the Sacramento River canyon into a quiet, forested drainage where a seasonal waterfall rewards hikers who make the moderate out-and-back journey through mixed conifer and deciduous forest. Beginning near the park's campground, the trail descends briefly before climbing alongside the Sacramento River, whose clear, cold waters rush over granite boulders in a series of cascades and pools popular with swimmers during the summer months. The trail then branches into the Root Creek drainage, ascending through a shaded canyon of Douglas fir, big-leaf maple, and black oak to a small but attractive waterfall that flows best during spring snowmelt and following winter rains. The canyon environment is cool and sheltered, offering a pleasant contrast to the exposed granite terrain of the Crags above. Pacific giant salamanders inhabit the creek margin, and dippers bob characteristically on midstream boulders. The forest canopy supports a diverse community of migratory songbirds during spring and fall migrations. Autumn brings spectacular color to the big-leaf maples lining the creek corridor. Leashed dogs are permitted on this trail, and the moderate terrain makes it suitable for families with older children seeking a manageable backcountry experience.
