Inner Canyon Trail

Inner Canyon Trail descends into the heart of Castlewood Canyon to trace Cherry Creek along the canyon floor, offering an intimate experience of the geology and riparian ecology that makes this park such a surprising gem in the Front Range foothills. The 3-mile loop crosses the creek several times via stepping stones and small bridges, making for an engaging and slightly adventurous hike that rewards careful footwork with views unavailable from the rim above.

Down in the canyon bottom, the world feels dramatically different — the sandstone walls rise steeply on both sides, the creek gurgles over cobbles and boulders, and the vegetation shifts to cottonwoods, box elders, and willows that provide dense shade in summer. Frogs, herons, and kingfishers are common sights along the water. The trail climbs back to the rim via switchbacks through scrub oak and pine, delivering a satisfying sense of accomplishment on its modest elevation gain. Creek crossings may be impassable after heavy rain or during spring snowmelt, so check conditions before visiting. Leashed dogs are permitted. A $10 per vehicle fee is charged at the entrance.
