Romero Ruins Trail

The Romero Ruins Trail at Catalina State Park combines outstanding Sonoran Desert scenery with a fascinating archaeological site, leading hikers through the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains to the preserved remains of a Hohokam village occupied between approximately 900 and 1450 CE. The ruins consist of stone foundations and walls representing a community that once housed hundreds of people who farmed the Cañada del Oro wash using sophisticated irrigation techniques. Interpretive panels at the site explain Hohokam culture, their remarkable engineering achievements, and the reasons for their eventual migration from this location. The trail to the ruins passes through classic Sonoran Desert habitat with impressive saguaro forests, palo verde trees, and a diversity of cacti and desert shrubs. The Santa Catalina Mountains rise dramatically to the east, providing a spectacular backdrop of granite peaks and ridges that tower thousands of feet above the desert floor. Canyon views open up as the trail gains elevation in the foothills, revealing the complex terrain where the mountains meet the desert. Wildlife along the route includes mule deer, javelinas, Gambel's quail, and a variety of raptors. Birdwatchers find the riparian areas near Romero Canyon particularly productive.
