Full Canyon Loop

The Full Canyon Loop is the most comprehensive trail experience at Cathedral Gorge State Park in southeastern Nevada, traversing the full length of this extraordinary geological wonder. The trail leads hikers through a surreal landscape of eroded bentonite clay spires, fins, and pinnacles that rise dramatically from the valley floor, creating formations that resemble the walls of a Gothic cathedral or an alien cityscape.

The loop climbs to Miller Point overlook, where hikers are rewarded with a sweeping panoramic view of the entire gorge and its intricate clay formations stretching across the valley. The park's unique geology was created over millions of years as lake bed sediments were exposed to erosion, sculpting the soft bentonite clay into thousands of elaborate spires and narrow passageways.

The 4-mile loop gains 300 feet of elevation and incorporates sections through narrow slot-like passages in the clay walls, adding an element of exploration and discovery to the hike. The trail is well-marked and suitable for hikers of moderate fitness. The $10 per vehicle entry fee applies. Leashed dogs are welcome on this trail. The clay formations are especially fragile after rain, so visitors should stay on established paths and avoid the gorge during or immediately after wet weather.
