Chautauqua to Enchanted Mesa – Chautauqua Park
This pleasant loop connects the historic 1898 Chautauqua grounds with the broad summit of Enchanted Mesa, offering a accessible and scenic introduction to the open space lands surrounding Boulder. The route departs from the beloved Chautauqua Meadow, where the Flatirons rise dramatically to the west in a scene that has graced countless photographs and paintings. The trail climbs at a comfortable grade through Ponderosa pine woodland, passing wildflower-covered slopes that burst with color from late spring through midsummer. Enchanted Mesa itself is a broad plateau providing sweeping prairie views to the east while the Flatirons tower behind. The historical significance of Chautauqua Park, designated a National Historic Landmark, adds cultural depth to the natural experience. The grounds were established as part of the national Chautauqua movement promoting lifelong education and the arts. The loop trail links several named paths through the open space, making it easy to extend the outing by branching onto adjacent routes toward the Royal Arch or Bluebell Shelter. Wildfire mitigation work has thinned sections of forest in recent years, opening new viewpoints. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the relatively gentle terrain makes this a good family option even when heavier routes are crowded.
