The Royal Arch Trail is one of Boulders most celebrated and challenging hikes, rewarding those who complete it with a natural quartzite arch framing the iconic Flatirons and sweeping views across Boulder Valley. The trail begins at Chautauqua Park, climbing steadily through Ponderosa pine forest and open talus fields before reaching the dramatic arch at approximately 6,900 feet. Scrambling sections near the summit require use of hands, making trekking poles a hindrance on the upper section. The arch itself is a geological marvel, formed by erosion of the Fountain Formation sandstone that composes the Flatirons. On clear days the arch perfectly frames the rolling plains stretching east toward Denver. Wildlife including mule deer and rock squirrels are common along the lower trail, while raptors soar overhead near the arch. The trailhead sits within the Chautauqua Historic District, a National Historic Landmark dating to 1898. Most hikers allow three to four hours for the full out-and-back journey. Start early in summer months to avoid afternoon thunderstorms and the heavy foot traffic that this deservedly popular trail attracts on weekends.
