Bald Rock Trail

Bald Rock Trail leads to an exposed quartzite outcrop just below the summit zone of Cheaha Mountain, offering panoramic views across the Talladega National Forest and the rolling Alabama ridge-and-valley landscape with significantly less effort than the full summit trail. Bald Rock is a distinctive pink quartzite outcrop polished smooth by erosion, providing an open platform above the treeline where wind and views combine for a memorable mountaintop experience. On clear days the vista extends south toward the coastal plain and north into the Alabama Valley and Ridge province, with the forested ridges of Talladega National Forest rolling away in every direction. The short approach trail winds through a boulder garden typical of the Cheaha summit area, with Virginia pine, mountain laurel, and chestnut oak clinging to rock crevices and shallow soil pockets. The rock outcrop itself hosts an interesting botanical community including mountain sandwort, prickly pear cactus, and various drought-adapted lichens and mosses that colonize the bare quartzite surface. Hawks and ravens are frequently observed riding thermals above the outcrop. The $5 vehicle fee applies. The trailhead is accessible from the main park road near the summit facilities area. This trail is suitable for families and serves as an accessible alternative to the more demanding summit routes.
