Cypress Bayou Walk

The Cypress Bayou Walk at Chicot State Park delivers visitors deep into one of Louisiana's most visually dramatic natural environments: the flooded cypress-tupelo swamp. Ancient bald cypress trees tower over the dark, tannin-stained water, their massive root systems sending up dozens of woody knees that protrude from the still surface in irregular formations. These pneumatophores, which help the trees exchange gases in the anaerobic swamp environment, create an otherworldly tableau that photographers and naturalists return to again and again.

Wood ducks are among the most colorful and commonly seen birds along this short walk, often perching in the cypress branches or paddling quietly through the shaded water. Great blue herons stand motionless in the shallows while red-bellied woodpeckers tap in the canopy overhead. A boardwalk section extends over open water, allowing close-up observation of swamp life without disturbing the habitat. The flat terrain and short distance make this accessible to visitors of all ages, and the dense canopy provides natural air conditioning during Louisiana's hot, humid summers.
