The Opera Box to Exclamation Point loop represents the most comprehensive hiking experience in Chimney Rock State Park, climbing above the famous monolith through increasingly exposed terrain to multiple overlooks including the dramatic Exclamation Point and the Sky Lounge observation area. The route ascends from the main trail network through upper gorge forest, passing the Opera Box viewpoint where the sheer walls of Hickory Nut Gorge frame a natural amphitheater of stone and forest below. Continuing higher, the trail reaches Exclamation Point at approximately 2,280 feet, a jutting rock outcrop with panoramic views exceeding even those from the top of Chimney Rock. The Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Lure, and Chimney Rock itself are all visible from this elevated platform, providing a rare perspective of the iconic monolith from above. The Sky Lounge, a glass-enclosed observation area accessed via elevator from below, can be included on the return leg. The loop descends through diverse southern Appalachian forest including stands of mountain laurel that bloom spectacular in late May and early June. Peregrine falcon nest sites are visible on the cliff faces from several of the upper overlooks, and park naturalists sometimes lead guided programs to observe these magnificent raptors. The combination of geology, wildlife, and sweeping mountain scenery makes this the signature hike of the park.
