Eagle River Nature Center Trail

The Eagle River Nature Center Trail loops through a spectacular glacial valley in the heart of Chugach State Park, beginning at the Eagle River Nature Center where interpretive exhibits introduce visitors to the ecology and geology of this remarkable landscape. The center itself sits at the confluence of Eagle River and its major tributary, surrounded by the towering peaks of the Chugach Mountains that rise dramatically above the valley floor.

The trail follows the braided channels of Eagle River through a mixed forest of Sitka spruce, birch, and cottonwood that provides outstanding habitat for a wide range of wildlife. Moose are extremely common along this route, with cows and calves frequently encountered in the riverside willows and alders throughout summer and fall. Beaver activity is visible throughout the trail system, with multiple active ponds providing excellent opportunities to observe these industrious animals at work.

Sockeye and silver salmon run up Eagle River in late summer and fall, drawing brown bears, bald eagles, and mergansers to the river corridor in impressive numbers. The trail provides multiple viewing platforms along the river where visitors can observe salmon spawning and the wildlife that depends on the annual run. The surrounding Chugach peaks, many still glacier-capped, provide a dramatic backdrop that makes even mundane moments on this trail feel cinematic.
