Clifty Falls Loop

The Clifty Falls Loop is one of the most spectacular canyon hikes in the Ohio River Valley, descending into a rugged gorge system cut by Clifty Creek through the Silurian-age dolomite and limestone of Jefferson County, Indiana. The loop passes four major waterfalls — Clifty Falls, Little Clifty Falls, Hoffman Falls, and Big Clifty Falls — each with a distinct character ranging from broad curtain falls to narrow plunges into deep circular pools. The canyon walls rise 100 to 150 feet on both sides, and the Ohio River is visible from the rim overlooks during the leaf-off season, providing context for the dramatic scale of the local topography. The gorge harbors relict populations of plants more typical of the Appalachian Mountains, including hemlock, mountain laurel, and several rare fern species that persist in the cool, north-facing canyon microclimate. The strenuous rating reflects the 500-foot cumulative elevation change and several sections of steep, rocky trail with significant exposure near the canyon rim. The trail is heavily trafficked on spring weekends when the waterfalls are at their most powerful. Spring runoff typically peaks in March and April, and Big Clifty Falls can run nearly dry by late summer. The adjacent Clifty Inn provides lodging within steps of the trailhead.
