West Rim Loop

The West Rim Loop circumnavigates Cloudland Canyon along its dramatic western rim, providing a series of overlooks into the 1,000-foot-deep gorge cut by Daniel Creek into the Pennsylvanian sandstone of Lookout Mountain. The trail follows the canyon edge closely enough that glimpses into the abyss appear frequently between pine and hardwood canopy, with three developed overlook platforms providing the most dramatic unobstructed views. The canyon's exposed geology tells a clear story: tan Pennsylvanian sandstone caps the rim, transitioning to gray shale and underlain by older Mississippian limestone near the canyon floor.

The loop traverses mixed pine-hardwood forest dominated by chestnut oak, Virginia pine, and sourwood on the dry, rocky rim soils. Mountain laurel blooms brilliantly in May, and sourwood's white racemes flower in July—the basis of Georgia's prized sourwood honey. Wild turkeys forage along the rim trail, and peregrine falcons have been documented hunting from the sandstone bluffs. The trail dips into several small side hollows where seeps support ferns and trillium. The moderate rating reflects two significant elevation undulations as the path crosses the heads of tributary drainages. The sunset view from the main overlook is considered among the finest in Georgia.
