Shore Path

The Shore Path at Cobscook Bay State Park follows the edge of a tidal cove that experiences some of the most extreme tidal fluctuations observable from any publicly accessible trail in the United States. The Bay of Fundy tidal system, which Cobscook Bay is part of, produces tidal ranges of 18 to 28 feet at various points, driven by the resonance of the bay's geometry with the natural oscillation period of the Atlantic Ocean. Walking this short path at low tide reveals vast expanses of exposed mudflat and eelgrass beds teeming with invertebrate life — blue mussels, periwinkles, green crabs, and moon snails all visible without getting wet. At high tide, the same ground lies under 20 or more feet of water. The tidal bore phenomenon, where the incoming tide creates a visible advancing wave front in the narrower channels, can be observed from the path on large tidal cycles. Harbor seals frequently haul out on exposed ledges within view of the trail. The boreal forest fringe of balsam fir and black spruce that borders the path is typical of the Acadian forest zone, a distinct forest type found only in the northern Maine coast and Maritime Canada.
