Dalles Mountain Ranch Trail traverses historic ranch terrain in the hills above the Columbia River, renowned as one of the finest wildflower hikes in the Pacific Northwest during its peak bloom in late March and April. The Dalles Mountain area sits at the transition between the maritime climate of the Columbia River Gorge and the dry interior of eastern Washington, creating a unique botanical environment where hundreds of species of native wildflowers converge in an extraordinary spring spectacle. Fields of balsamroot sunflowers turn the hillsides brilliant yellow, complemented by purple lupine, red Indian paintbrush, white phlox, and the delicate blooms of shooting stars and bitterroot. The trail climbs steadily from the valley to open ranch country with sweeping views across the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon hills rising across the water, and the Cascade peaks including Mount Hood visible to the southwest on clear days. The historic Dalles Mountain Ranch buildings, dating from the early twentieth century, add human interest to the landscape and interpret the ranching history of this remarkable place. Outside of spring wildflower season, the trail offers expansive views and excellent birdwatching, with meadowlarks, raptors, and migratory songbirds utilizing the open grassland habitat. Summer temperatures can be extreme; spring visits are strongly recommended for the combined floral and scenic experience.
