Silver Cascade Trail

Silver Cascade is one of the most immediately accessible and visually dramatic roadside waterfalls in the entire White Mountains region, tumbling 250 feet in a series of ribbon-like cascades and fan-shaped falls down the steep western wall of Crawford Notch directly alongside Route 302. The trail is essentially a formal path to the base and middle sections of the cascade system, which pours over a series of ledge steps and smooth rock faces carved into pale gray Conway granite. The cascade's character changes dramatically with season and precipitation: in spring snowmelt it roars with impressive volume and considerable spray, while in dry late summer it narrows to delicate silver threads that inspired the name. The geological context is significant — Crawford Notch is a classic glacially carved through-valley, and the waterfall represents a hanging valley tributary stream that has not yet eroded down to match the glacially deepened valley floor. The notch's dramatic U-shaped cross-section, 1,000-foot cliffs on both sides, and flat valley floor are textbook examples of glacial valley morphology. The historic Saco River begins its long journey to the Gulf of Maine near this point. The AMC Highland Center at Crawford Notch is nearby and provides excellent interpretive resources about White Mountains geology and ecology.
