Prairie Bluff Trail

The Prairie Bluff Trail ascends from the Missouri River bottomlands onto the upland prairie plateau above Cross Ranch State Park, rewarding hikers with sweeping panoramic views across the river valley and the rolling mixed-grass prairie that stretches to the horizon in every direction. The climb is gradual, following a well-defined track through a transitional zone where cottonwood forest gives way to bur oak woodland and ultimately to open prairie dominated by little bluestem, sideoats grama, and western wheatgrass. The bluff edge offers some of the finest unobstructed Missouri River views accessible on foot anywhere in North Dakota.

Spring wildflowers are a particular draw on this trail from mid-May through June, when pasqueflowers, prairie smoke, and golden alexander bloom in succession across the hillside. The upland prairie section supports populations of the endangered regal fritillary butterfly, which depend on native violet species for larval habitat. Swainson's hawks and Ferruginous hawks hunt the open prairie in summer, and sharp-tailed grouse are regularly flushed from the tall grass along the bluff edge. The bison herd managed within the park sometimes grazes the upland sections, providing excellent photography opportunities with the river valley as backdrop. The loop descends via a separate drainage back to the trailhead through mature woodland that provides welcome shade on warm summer afternoons.
