Pelican Point Beach Walk

The Pelican Point Beach Walk is a gentle coastal stroll connecting some of the most pristine and accessible tide pools along the Orange County coastline, combined with views of the El Moro kelp beds that shelter an extraordinary diversity of marine life. Beginning near Pelican Point, the route follows the undeveloped cobblestone and sandy beaches that define Crystal Cove State Park marine strand, largely unchanged from their natural state due to dedicated conservation efforts over many decades. The rocky reef platforms exposed at low tide reveal a spectacular intertidal community including ochre sea stars, hermit crabs, sculpin, and brilliantly colored anemones. The offshore kelp forest visible through the clear water shelters harbor seals, garibaldi fish, and occasionally migrating gray whales during the winter season. The historic Crystal Cove cottage district provides an evocative backdrop, its weathered wooden structures a reminder of the beach communities that once lined much of Southern California coast before development transformed the shoreline. Beachcombers frequently find wave-polished glass and shells along the strand. Visit during a minus tide for the best tide pool exploration, and always step carefully to avoid crushing the marine organisms.
