Catoctin Hollow Trail

Catoctin Hollow Trail climbs through the heart of the Catoctin Mountain range in the vicinity of Camp David, the presidential retreat located within the adjacent Catoctin Mountain Park — a proximity that gives the area an unusual historical and political resonance alongside its considerable natural beauty. The trail ascends steeply from the creek valley through Catoctin greenstone forest, passing exposed rock outcrops of the ancient volcanic formation that gives the mountain range its distinctive character. The summit ridge offers views south toward the Monocacy Valley and the Piedmont farmland beyond. Catoctin Mountain's forest composition reflects a long history of intense human use: charcoal production in the 18th and 19th centuries stripped the mountain nearly bare, and the current forest is entirely second-growth, though now approximately a century old. Chestnut oak dominates the dry ridge crests, while tulip poplar and red maple fill the moister hollows. The hollow itself — a narrow, steep-sided valley — shelters a dense stand of mixed conifers planted by Civilian Conservation Corps crews in the 1930s as part of the federal effort to restore the degraded watershed. Ravens nest in the upper reaches of the hollow, and their deep croaking calls echo off the greenstone walls. The loop descends via a secondary ridge through open forest to return to the trailhead near Hunting Creek Lake.
