Hynds Lodge Trail

The Hynds Lodge Trail combines a pleasant lakeside walk with a visit to one of Wyoming's most historic recreational structures. The 1923 Hynds Lodge, built from native stone and timber by prominent Cheyenne businessman Harry Hynds, served as a private hunting and fishing retreat before becoming part of the state park system. Today it stands as a beautifully preserved example of early twentieth-century rustic architecture in the American West.

The trail loops around Crystal Reservoir, the largest of Curt Gowdy's three reservoirs, through a landscape of granite outcrops, ponderosa pines, and open meadows. The reservoir attracts excellent bird life, including western grebes, common loons during migration, and belted kingfishers that patrol the rocky shoreline. Rainbow and brown trout are stocked in the reservoir, making it a popular fishing destination alongside the hiking trail.

The gentle terrain makes this an ideal family hike, with multiple spots to access the water's edge for rest breaks and wildlife observation. The combination of historical interest, scenic reservoir views, and consistent wildlife sightings makes the Hynds Lodge Trail one of the most well-rounded and enjoyable routes in Curt Gowdy State Park, particularly attractive for visitors with children or those seeking a relaxed afternoon outing in the Medicine Bow foothills.
