Twin Mountain Circuit

The Twin Mountain Circuit is the most ambitious trail in Curt Gowdy State Park, ascending to the park's highest point while delivering exceptional views of Vedauwoo Recreation Area and the Laramie Range to the north. This full-day loop traverses the most remote and rugged terrain within the park, rewarding hikers with a genuine sense of backcountry solitude rarely found in a state park so close to a major city.

The route climbs steadily through ponderosa pine forest and open granite meadows, with multiple sections requiring careful route-finding among the boulder fields. The twin summits offer 360-degree panoramic views encompassing the high plains of southeastern Wyoming, the Snowy Range to the west, and on exceptionally clear days, the faint blue outline of the Front Range in Colorado. The iconic granite formations of Vedauwoo, just a few miles to the east, are particularly dramatic from this vantage point.

Wildlife is abundant throughout the circuit, with mule deer, elk, wild turkey, and occasionally black bear inhabiting the more remote sections of the trail. The circuit also passes all three of the park's reservoirs, offering water access and fishing opportunities throughout. Hikers should carry plenty of water, as natural sources are limited, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions that are common in the Medicine Bow Mountain foothills.
