Pine Lane Trail loops through a varied landscape in the southern portion of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, combining a visit to the Ledges overlook with a walk through one of the park's most distinctive plantation forests. The pine plantation — a dense stand of white pine and Norway spruce planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and 1940s — creates a cathedral atmosphere entirely unlike the surrounding native hardwood forest, with a springy needle duff floor and near-total canopy closure that suppresses understory growth. The trail emerges from the plantation to reach the Virginia Kendall Ledges, a set of Sharon Conglomerate outcrops similar to those at Nelson Kennedy Ledges but more accessible and less strenuous to reach. The ledge-top views extend across the Cuyahoga Valley and are particularly spectacular in autumn. Ice Box Cave, a cool-air recess beneath one of the ledges, can be explored on a short side spur. The trail returns through native hardwood forest of oak, maple, and beech. The easy rating reflects the modest elevation change and well-maintained trail surface. This trail lies within the Octagon Shelter trailhead area, which fills quickly on fall foliage weekends.
