Azalea Glen Loop

Azalea Glen Loop is named for the western azalea shrubs that bloom spectacularly along the stream corridors of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park in late spring, filling the air with a sweet fragrance and painting the riparian areas with clusters of white and pale pink flowers. The trail explores the foothills terrain on the flanks of Cuyamaca Peak, passing through a landscape that demonstrates the ongoing ecological recovery following the 2003 Cedar Fire that burned through the park. The interplay of young pine regeneration, open chaparral, and remnant stands of mature black oak creates a richly textured landscape that supports an impressive diversity of wildlife in the two decades since the fire. Mountain quail, an often heard but seldom seen species, inhabit the dense chaparral along this route, their descending whistled call a characteristic sound of the Cuyamaca Mountains. The loop descends into a stream canyon shaded by alders and willows where water striders skim the surface of seasonal pools and western pond turtles sun themselves on exposed logs. Spring brings the azalea bloom along with a parade of other wildflowers including shooting stars and Indian paintbrush.
