Skyline Drive Trail

The Skyline Drive Trail traverses the high ridge terrain of Davis Mountains State Park, offering sweeping views across the highest mountain range in Texas in a landscape of volcanic rock, mountain grassland, and open sky that feels a world removed from the desert lowlands surrounding it. The Davis Mountains are a sky island range, an isolated volcanic massif rising abruptly from the Chihuahuan Desert with peaks exceeding 8,000 feet at Paisano Pass and beyond, creating a cooler, wetter climate that supports plant and animal communities found nowhere else in Texas. The trail loop climbs from the park campground through open woodland of pinon pine, alligator juniper, and gray oak before ascending to the exposed ridgeline where the panoramic quality of the experience becomes fully apparent. The surrounding high desert landscape includes the McDonald Observatory visible on a distant ridge to the northeast, one of the world s premier astronomical research facilities benefiting from the exceptional dark skies of the Trans-Pecos. Mule deer, javelina, and Montezuma quail are regularly encountered along the trail, while the higher elevations attract Mexican jays, acorn woodpeckers, and the occasional mountain trogon near the park s upper boundary. The Davis Mountains receive considerably more rainfall than the surrounding desert, making summer hiking more pleasant than in lower Trans-Pecos parks, though afternoon thunderstorms remain a concern between July and September.
