Lighthouse Point Trail

Lighthouse Point Trail is one of the most visited routes in Deception Pass State Park, the most popular state park in Washington. This short loop winds through wind-sculpted madrone and Douglas fir forest to dramatic rocky headlands overlooking the Deception Pass strait. The trail offers stunning views of the iconic 180-foot bridge that spans the turbulent tidal channel connecting Puget Sound to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Strong currents rush through the narrow passage, creating dramatic whirlpools and churning water that hikers can observe from rocky outcrops along the trail. The route passes near the historic lighthouse site and offers multiple viewpoints across the San Juan Channel toward Whidbey Island. Interpretive signs explain the geology, marine ecology, and history of this strategically important waterway. Tidepools along the rocky shoreline reveal sea stars, anemones, mussels, and hermit crabs during low tide. Bald eagles frequently soar above the strait hunting for fish. The trail is well-marked and suitable for all ability levels, making it the ideal introduction to this spectacular park. Arrive early on weekends to secure parking, as the park regularly fills to capacity during summer months.
