Rosario Head Trail

Rosario Head Trail leads to a stunning rocky headland in Deception Pass State Park that is renowned for its exceptional tidepools and its proximity to the Rosario Beach Marine Laboratory, a satellite facility of the University of Washington. This short loop traverses open bluffs with sweeping views across Rosario Strait toward Lopez Island and the Canadian Gulf Islands beyond. The headland is a designated underwater preserve, and the adjacent shoreline features some of the richest intertidal habitat on the Pacific Coast. At low tide, explorers can observe ochre sea stars, purple urchins, giant green anemones, chitons, and dozens of other marine invertebrate species in the exposed rock pools. Interpretive signs throughout the area explain the ecology of the Salish Sea and the importance of tidal zone conservation. The beach below the headland offers protected swimming and a boat launch area. Cultural history is also present at Rosario Head, where a statue of the Samish Nation figure Maiden of Deception Pass honors the Indigenous history of this area. Birdwatchers will enjoy scanning the waters for rhinoceros auklets, pigeon guillemots, and harlequin ducks year-round. The short distance makes this trail accessible to families with young children and visitors of all fitness levels.
