Byers Lake Loop

The Byers Lake Loop circles one of Denali State Park's most scenic and accessible lakes, offering an easy flat circuit through boreal forest and wetland terrain with the potential for breathtaking views of Denali, North America's highest peak, on clear days. Byers Lake itself is a glacially carved basin of exceptional clarity, its blue-green waters reflecting the surrounding spruce forest and the immense mountain presence to the north when the weather cooperates.

The trail weaves through a mosaic of white and black spruce forest, sedge meadows, and muskegs that support a remarkable diversity of subarctic wildlife. Moose are extremely common, with individuals and cows with calves regularly encountered along the trail throughout summer. Common loons nest on the lake and their haunting calls echo across the water in the long Alaskan summer evenings, creating an unforgettable acoustic backdrop to the hiking experience.

Denali dominates the northern horizon when visible, its 20,310-foot summit rising so dramatically above the surrounding terrain that the mountain appears almost impossibly large from this distance. The Alaska Range clouds frequently obscure the peak, so visitors should celebrate any sighting and not take clear days for granted. Bald eagles patrol the lakeshore, and sockeye salmon spawn in Byers Creek at the lake's outlet in late summer, drawing bears and eagles. The campground adjacent to the trailhead makes this an excellent base for multi-day exploration of Denali State Park's extensive trail network.
