Canyon Rim Boardwalk is an accessible paved and boardwalk trail that traverses the edge of Little River Canyon, providing visitors of all mobility levels with stunning overlook views into one of the deepest river gorges in the eastern United States. The boardwalk follows the canyon rim for its entire length, with multiple designated overlook platforms positioned at the most dramatic viewpoints. From these platforms, the canyon drops 600 feet to the river below, and on clear days hikers can see the white water of Little River rushing over bedrock far below. The canyon walls expose a detailed geological record of the Pennsylvanian Period, with distinct layers of sandstone, shale, and coal seams visible in the stratigraphy. Fall foliage transforms the canyon into a tapestry of red, orange, and yellow, making the overlooks among the best fall color viewpoints in Alabama. The fully accessible design makes this trail appropriate for visitors using wheelchairs, strollers, or other mobility aids. Interpretive panels along the route explain the canyon's geological formation and natural history. No entrance fee is charged. The boardwalk is located near the park visitor center and can be easily combined with a visit to the DeSoto Falls Loop for a more complete experience of the park's natural features.
