Yellow Rock Trail

The Yellow Rock Trail climbs steadily from Lee Creek Valley to an exposed sandstone bluff that delivers the finest panoramic views available in Devil's Den State Park. The destination, known as Yellow Rock, is a broad outcropping of pale yellow and tan sandstone that juts dramatically from the forested hillside, offering unobstructed views across the Lee Creek Valley and the surrounding Ozark ridgelines. The vista is particularly stunning in fall when the hardwood canopy below is transformed into a tapestry of orange, red, and gold.

The trail gains nearly 600 feet of elevation over its 1.8-mile one-way distance, making this the most aerobically demanding hike in the park. The route climbs through beautiful mixed hardwood forest dominated by white and red oak, hickory, and sugar maple before breaking out onto the open rock. The sandstone surface of Yellow Rock can be slippery when wet, so caution is advised after rain. The sense of exposure and the quality of the view at the summit make the effort thoroughly worthwhile. Returning hikers are treated to close-up views of the park's geology on the descent, with the sandstone layering particularly visible on the steeper sections of the trail.
