West Bluff Trail

The West Bluff Trail provides the opposite perspective on Devil's Lake from its companion East Bluff route, scaling the quartzite escarpment on the lake's western shore and offering cross-lake views directly toward the East Bluff and the parking areas beyond. The climb begins at the south shore beach area through dense oak and hickory forest before transitioning to the quartzite talus that characterizes both bluffs. The most famous geological feature on the West Bluff is Balanced Rock, a refrigerator-sized quartzite boulder that has been teetering on a narrow base for thousands of years and serves as one of the most photographed spots in Wisconsin. The bluff trail runs along the rim through scattered red oak and white oak with an open understory, allowing nearly continuous views east across the lake. The still water below reflects the opposite bluff in calm morning conditions, creating a mirror image that doubles the apparent height of the escarpment. Rock climbers frequent the vertical quartzite faces below the rim trail, their colorful ropes visible against the pink and tan rock. The descent follows a series of short switchbacks through a mature forest where wild columbine and hepatica grow in rock crevices. The West Bluff loop can be combined with the East Bluff trail via the lakeshore paths for a full circumnavigation of the lake.
