The Summit Trail at Diamond Head State Monument climbs the interior of an extinct volcanic tuff cone to a commanding 761-foot summit overlooking Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. The route passes through a series of World War II military bunkers, concrete tunnels, and spiral staircases that once served as a coastal defense command post. From the summit lookout, hikers enjoy sweeping panoramas of Waikiki, the Ko Olina coastline, and on clear days the neighboring islands. The crater was formed roughly 300,000 years ago in a single explosive eruption and has been geologically dormant ever since. Despite the short distance, the trail involves moderate climbing with narrow staircases and uneven footing. Morning hours offer cooler temperatures and thinner crowds. The summit is managed by the Hawaii Division of State Parks, and timed entry reservations are now recommended during peak seasons to manage the high visitor volume to this iconic Oahu landmark.
