Tuscarora Overlook Trail

The Tuscarora Overlook Trail stands as Douthat State Park's premier long-distance challenge, ascending the rugged Allegheny Mountain front to a rocky 360-degree summit overlook that straddles the Virginia–West Virginia border and surveys an ocean of forested ridges in every direction. Douthat is one of the original six Virginia state parks, opened in 1936 and built almost entirely by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the Tuscarora trail reflects the CCC's ambition—well-constructed with careful stone waterbars and switchbacks engineered to minimize erosion on the steep Allegheny flanks. The trail ascends through a rich cove hardwood forest in its lower reaches, where tulip poplar, basswood, and sugar maple form a high canopy over a dense carpet of ferns and wildflowers. Mid-elevation slopes transition to drier chestnut oak and mountain laurel communities, with the latter creating spectacular late-May bloom displays that perfume the air for hundreds of feet. The summit overlook's quartzite outcrops provide a natural platform for views extending from Warm Springs Mountain to the south to Bald Knob and the Greenbrier Highland to the northwest. The Virginia-West Virginia ridgeline visible from the summit follows the same geological boundary that separates the Allegheny Plateau from the Ridge and Valley physiographic province. Ruffed grouse are frequently flushed along the upper trail corridor.
