Indian Beach Trail

Indian Beach Trail descends from the Ecola State Park road to one of the most beautiful and photogenic beaches on the Oregon coast, a secluded cove popular with surfers and offering spectacular views south toward Cannon Beach and the iconic Haystack Rock sea stack. The short trail drops through dense Sitka spruce and red alder forest to emerge at a sheltered beach backed by forested headlands on both sides. The protected cove creates slightly calmer wave conditions than the open coast, making Indian Beach a favorite spot for surfing instruction and intermediate surfers, and the colorful wetsuits and boards add a dynamic element to the coastal scenery. The beach itself is composed of dark volcanic sand and pebbles, with tidepools accessible at the north end of the cove during low tide. Sea stars, hermit crabs, chitons, and anemones inhabit these intertidal areas, and the tidepools at Indian Beach are considered among the most accessible and productive in the park. Views from the beach look south past the forested headland to Cannon Beach, where Haystack Rock rises 235 feet from the surf as one of the most recognized landmarks on the Pacific coast. Harbor seals haul out on offshore rocks and can often be observed from the beach. The short trail distance and dramatic destination make this an essential stop for visitors to Ecola State Park regardless of fitness level or available time.
