Tillamook Head Trail

Tillamook Head Trail traverses one of the most historically significant coastal routes on the Oregon coast, following a path first documented by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in January 1806 when members of the Corps of Discovery crossed this dramatic headland to view a beached whale reported by the Clatsop people. The point-to-point route crosses the full width of Tillamook Head from Ecola State Park near Cannon Beach southward to Seaside, passing through old-growth Sitka spruce forest and offering spectacular ocean views from open headland sections high above the Pacific. The trail climbs steeply from the trailhead through cathedral Sitka spruce forest draped in club moss, reaching the open headland where the panorama encompasses the Pacific Ocean, Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse offshore, and miles of coastline in both directions. The historic trail corridor passes through some of the finest remaining old-growth coastal spruce forest in Oregon, with trees several centuries old creating a primeval atmosphere. Interpretive signs along the route explain the Lewis and Clark connection and the natural history of the coastal headland ecosystem. A backcountry camp near the headland summit provides an option for overnight trips. Shuttle logistics require two vehicles or a pickup arrangement. The combination of historical significance, old-growth forest, and dramatic coastal scenery makes this one of Oregon's most memorable long hikes.
