Fanny's Ford Trail

Fanny's Ford Trail follows the Eno River through one of the most historically rich sections of Eno River State Park, passing several mill ruins that speak to the river's industrial past. The ford itself was a well-known crossing point on the Eno River used by settlers and traders for over two centuries. The ruins of the Cabe Grist Mill and its associated millrace are visible near the ford, providing a tangible connection to 18th and 19th century piedmont history. The trail crosses the river at the historic ford location, which can be waded when water levels are low, or detoured via footbridge when the river runs high. The surrounding forest features mature piedmont hardwoods including tulip poplar, beech, and several species of oak growing above a lush understory of ironwood, dogwood, and spicebush. Spring wildflowers are abundant in the cove areas near the river, including bloodroot, hepatica, and Virginia bluebells that bloom in March and April. The gentle terrain makes this trail appropriate for families and beginning hikers wanting an introduction to Eno River State Park. No entrance fee is charged. Parking is available at the Fews Ford access area on Cole Mill Road in northwestern Durham.
