Piper-Cox Connector

Piper-Cox Connector winds through the heart of Eno River State Park's piedmont forest, linking trail sections along the Eno River corridor in a route that emphasizes the quiet beauty of mature upland hardwood woodland. This connector trail traverses rolling terrain above the river, passing through a landscape of mixed oak-hickory-pine forest that represents some of the best-preserved piedmont woodland in the greater Durham area. The understory is rich with native shrubs including pawpaw, serviceberry, and native azalea, the latter providing spectacular orange blooms in late April. Wildlife observation is excellent on this less-traveled route, with deer frequently encountered in early morning and late afternoon, and various woodland owl species calling after dark. The trail rolls through several creek drainages, each supporting its own distinct plant community. Spring migration turns the trail into a birding hotspot as Neotropical migrants pass through the piedmont corridor, and the park has recorded over 170 bird species across its trail system. The out-and-back format means hikers can turn around at any point, making it flexible for various fitness levels. Eno River State Park charges no entrance fee. The trail connects the Few's Ford and Piper Access areas.
