Fall Creek Falls Trail

Fall Creek Falls Trail descends into the gorge to reach the base of Fall Creek Falls, at 256 feet the tallest free-falling waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. The falls plunge from the Cumberland Plateau rim in a single unbroken sheet into a deep sandstone-walled gorge, creating a mist zone at the base that nourishes lush fern communities and supports rare moisture-loving plant species. The descent is steep and involves a metal staircase in the final section, but the reward is a direct face-to-face encounter with one of the most impressive waterfalls in the eastern United States. The volume of water varies considerably seasonally, with winter and spring providing the most dramatic displays after significant rainfall. The pool at the base is off-limits for swimming due to the dangerous currents and cold temperatures created by the churning falls. An observation platform near the gorge rim provides a top-down view before hikers descend. The short distance belies the significant effort required for the return climb back to the rim. The park charges a $7 vehicle fee. Fall Creek Falls State Park is the largest and most visited state park in Tennessee, and this trail sees substantial foot traffic, particularly on summer weekends.
