Gorge Overlook Trail

Gorge Overlook Trail traverses the rim of the Fall Creek gorge system, visiting overlook points above four separate waterfalls in a single loop. The trail follows the edge of the Cumberland Plateau escarpment, where sandstone and conglomerate layers have been carved by Fall Creek and its tributaries into a spectacular gorge landscape. The four overlooks reveal Cane Creek Falls, Cane Creek Cascades, Piney Creek Falls, and Fall Creek Falls from above, each offering a different perspective on the gorge architecture. Interpretive signage along the route explains the geological processes that formed the Cumberland Plateau and the role of water erosion in carving the gorge system over millions of years. The rim forest is a mature mixed hardwood community dominated by white oak, shagbark hickory, and tulip poplar, with a diverse understory of native shrubs and wildflowers. The views from the overlooks are best in winter and early spring when the deciduous canopy is leafless, revealing the full depth and extent of the gorge below. The $7 vehicle fee applies to all park visitors. The Gorge Overlook trailhead is located near the main visitor center, making it easy to combine with other park activities. This trail offers the most comprehensive introduction to the park's waterfall landscape with the least physical effort.
