Paw Paw Trail

Paw Paw Trail descends to the bottom of the Fall Creek gorge and traverses the gorge floor, crossing the creek on a dramatic cable suspension bridge that sways above the rushing water. This is the most immersive gorge experience available in Fall Creek Falls State Park, putting hikers at creek level in the heart of the sandstone canyon. The gorge bottom supports a unique ecological community sheltered from wind and extreme temperatures, including massive paw paw trees that give the trail its name. Paw paw, North America's largest native fruit, produces a tropical-flavored yellow fruit in September that attracts raccoons, foxes, and black bears. The creek banks host ferns, mosses, and moisture-loving wildflowers in abundance. The cable bridge crossing is a highlight that appeals to all ages, though those with acrophobia may find it challenging. The return climb out of the gorge is the most strenuous section, ascending several hundred feet via switchbacks cut into the gorge wall. The $7 vehicle fee applies. This trail is best hiked in spring when wildflowers are at peak and water levels are high, or in fall when paw paw fruit ripens and the gorge hardwoods display spectacular color. Check bridge status before visiting as it occasionally closes for maintenance.
