Interpretive Trail

The Interpretive Trail is a short accessible loop originating at the park visitor center and providing a thorough introduction to the cultural history and archaeological significance of First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park. The well-maintained path connects outdoor interpretive stations with the visitor center exhibits, creating a seamless educational experience that presents Blackfeet Nation history, buffalo jump methodology, and the archaeological evidence recovered from the site in an accessible and respectful manner.

The visitor center itself houses exceptional exhibits including actual bone fragments, stone tools, and projectile points recovered from the site, displayed alongside Blackfeet artwork and oral historical accounts that contextualize the material culture in living cultural tradition. The interpretive stations along the outdoor trail address topics including the spiritual preparation required before a jump, the roles of different community members in the hunt, the processing of bison carcasses, and the transformation of the northern plains ecology by Euro-American settlement and commercial bison hunting. This trail is fully accessible for visitors with mobility limitations and provides the essential interpretive framework that enriches visits to the longer prairie and cliff trails. Park staff and Blackfeet cultural liaisons occasionally offer enhanced programming that deepens the experience beyond what static interpretation alone can convey.
