Cavern Tour Trail

The Cavern Tour Trail at Florida Caverns State Park descends into the only air-filled cavern in Florida open to the public, a remarkable geological treasure in a state better known for its beaches and springs. The cave system formed in ancient marine limestone as slightly acidic groundwater slowly dissolved the rock over millions of years, creating a series of chambers decorated with an extraordinary variety of speleothems. Stalactites hang from the ceilings, stalagmites rise from the floors, and columns, flowstone, and cave coral cover virtually every surface in intricate formations.

Ranger-guided tours lead small groups through illuminated passages, explaining the geology, cave ecosystem, and formation processes. Cave crickets, cave spiders, and several bat species inhabit the deeper chambers, representing a specialized community of organisms adapted to the perpetual darkness. The temperature inside remains a constant 65 degrees year-round, providing welcome relief during Florida summers. The trail loops through the main chamber complex and exits near the entrance, where visitors emerge blinking into the sunlight of the surrounding floodplain forest.
