Floodplain Trail

Floodplain Trail at Florida Caverns State Park explores the Chipola River floodplain, a landscape shaped by karst geology, periodic flooding, and centuries of natural ecological processes. The trail winds through bottomland hardwood forest dominated by water tupelo, swamp chestnut oak, and river birch before emerging onto exposed limestone outcrops overlooking the clear-flowing Chipola River. Natural spring vents bubble up through the limestone bedrock at several points along the trail, feeding the river with cool, mineral-rich groundwater.

The exposed limestone bluffs along the river are characteristic of the Marianna Lowlands karst region, revealing ancient marine fossils embedded in the rock. Prothonotary warblers nest in cavities along the river corridor during spring, and swallow-tailed kites soar overhead in summer. River otters are occasionally spotted in the Chipola River, and the floodplain shelters white-tailed deer, raccoons, and a rich community of woodland amphibians. The karst springs provide some of the clearest water in the Panhandle, and the combination of limestone outcrops, spring vents, and bottomland forest creates one of the most geologically interesting trail experiences in north Florida.
