Lake Pontchartrain Shoreline – Fontainebleau Sp
The Lake Pontchartrain Shoreline walk at Fontainebleau State Park leads visitors along one of Louisiana's most historically evocative landscapes. The route passes the romantic ruins of the Millaudon sugar plantation resort, which flourished in the early 1800s before being destroyed by fire. Brick chimneys and crumbling foundations emerge from the grass like sentinels of a forgotten era, providing a striking contrast to the open water views beyond.
The path follows the sandy beach shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain, one of the largest estuaries in the United States. Breezes off the lake keep temperatures manageable even in summer. Pelicans, gulls, and terns patrol the shoreline while anglers cast from the water's edge. The gentle lapping of the lake and the wide-open sky make this an especially peaceful outing. The out-and-back format allows visitors to turn around whenever they wish, and the flat terrain means virtually no elevation challenge along the way.
